As a person who moved to New York City after living my entire life in California, I noticed similarities between the friends I was making in the city and the people I was meeting. I grew a need to explore those similarities between other transplants on how and why someone from each state would come to make New York City their new home.

To document these individuals and their stories I decided to capture a portrait but also interview them. I asked the participants to talk to me on camera about their childhood and adolescence in their home state, the story of how and when they decided to come to New York City and there likes and dislikes of both places. The portrait of the participant is to capture the individual's uniqueness . After getting to know the person from the interview I was able to get a moment from each that reflects their complacency for both their home state and new home.

After living in New York City for 7 years I knew it was time for me to try something new and leave, but before I could go I had to give a gift back to the city that gave me so much. This project was created to share the stories of fifty Americans who came from different backgrounds in search of a new home in the country's largest and most diverse city. It is a project for New York City, as much as it is for the rest of the country. It is for people who have lived in New York City, or have the dream to one day live New York City.
